Living to Honor God’s Calling (IV)

February 13, 2010

(Note: There is a small chiasm [i.e., inverted parallel structure] in 5:19-21.  The outer [A] layer deals with the Second Commandment [i.e., “Love your neighbor as yourself.”].  The inner [B] layer reflects the First Commandment [i.e, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart…”].

“The Filling of the Holy Spirit”

Ephesians 5:15-21

Introduction

The Big Idea– The spiritual power source and wisdom for evangelism and godly balanced relationships is the Holy Spirit.

(Acts 6:3, 5, 8; 7:55; 11:24; 13:9) In certain situations, the filling of the Holy Spirit is your empowerment for bold witnessing and exhortation.

By spiritually qualified leaders (Acts 6:3)

By Stephen (Acts 6:5, 8; 7:55)

By Barnabas (Acts 11:24)

By Saul/Paul (Acts 13:9)

(Ephesians 5:15-21) Always, the filling of the Spirit empowers wise, joyous, mutually submissive relationships to the glory of God.

Be wise and spiritually opportunistic (vv. 15-16)

Do God’s will: be controlled by the Holy Spirit (vv. 17-18)

(A, A’) Let the Spirit’s filling overflow in your horizontal relationships (vv. 19a, 21)

(B, B’) Let the Spirit’s filling overflow in your vertical relationships (vv. 19b-20)

The Bottom Line– Who’s in control in your life?  If it’s not the Holy Spirit, then you have a “control problem!”
